Barbet hipscores...and narrow minds. envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 14/05/2012 @ 14:40
Statistics are the best source of information!

http://frenchwaterdog.org/2012/05/14/barbet-in-numbers-hips-dysplasia/
People who base their selection only on inbreeding% and hipscore results are doing as much harm to the breed as people using and re-using the same studs over and over and not widening their options or prerequisites just like others who only use what they are told to use, so as to get the curliest dogs imaginable with totally un-manageable coats that they cannot deal with and eventually keep their dogs shaved year round. Then they say to others..." don't get a Barbet, the coat is horrendous to keep up." That is not true, either.

Who is going to start? envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 12/05/2012 @ 09:36
Those takling ever so new activities with their Barbets to promote the breed, would certainly enjoy showing a Barbet can even do this?

I can hardly wait! This video is absolutely fabulous! Enjoy it!

Why there are very few Vieux Barbet in Switzerland envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 11/05/2012 @ 06:00
http://www.barbetprederedy.ch/5094/55001.html
When only selecting on coat type, one can undertsand how races change.
Leading people to believe that in the country of origin, people are unconscious about confirmation and conformation is really an attitude that is unacceptable from a country who has changed a breed.

We have fought to have Ulysse reproduce as much as possible before it becomes too late. There is not a drop of poodle blood in him which makes the difference in size and morphology from 54/55 size Barbets ( Vieux Barbet) and 60 /66 for Barbet Moderne and that has everything to to with genes and phenotype.

The added dimension of scientific study on colors below for which Pr Denis is an authority is the frosting on the cake...Blue is NOT a Barbet color.

Then, some will stop at nothing to slander.

From trying to work on Barbet colors, and how one may be trying to eradicate "VIEUX Barbet" colors and replace them with Barbet Moderne colors, which are not the same; I have come across a very interesting color that you can have a read about.

Dilution of pigmentation. Grayish blue.Slate color.
There are many examples around. Here's one, below. It starts with a black dog that progressively turns gray with age( legs, ears, body). The coats is very curly and frizzy. The coat must be kept fairly short. I am sure it sounds familiar.Look at the words in the text and you will recognize the info. Especially those who claim to be real breeders as opposed to us, only amateurs.

A male this color will be 59 or more generally 60 to 66 cms tall, and kept with a very short coat, ears included.

This site has lovely photos, one of which is of a dog with very gray legs, typical of the info mentionned above.

A "VIEUX Barbet" will never arbour this color above. It is not in the genes.* The size of a "VIEUX barbet being 54 to 56 cms for a male. The coat is easier to groom and is silkier. The black hairs stay black and are mixed with white hairs. This is the color that corresponds to the 1894 standard which says: black-gray which is not black; gray...as you can see for yourself.

You can hardly compare the colors and the textures.

Then, finally when you want to change or modify colors in a breed, in order to eventually eradicate a color or a line,or breeders, it certainly is important to study the repercussions it entails.
Hard work, but someone has to do it when our elected representative is useless.

You ought to be able to see an entire brochette of these dogs in Austria coming up shortly. Remember you saw it here, first.

* of course there can be an exception, since with genes, one never knows.BUT, it is quite rare.

Standards change, breeds remain and dogs eventually die. envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 06/05/2012 @ 08:43
Between the 2 databases(one official and often quite "off" and the other that doesn't arrange the affairs of many), there certainly is a hellova difference when calculating inbreeding.

Ex:

One "wrong" at 30+ % that arranges some to blether about and the other rather correct!

Coefficient of Inbreeding (this value is medium) 18.2327%

Then selectiong on poodle types does not help morphology, when skeletons are completely deformed, but inbreeding is low...

Is it better to use a young dog who has done nothing in his life( except reproduce) or a dog that has a good track record, is healthy and has Barbet blood in a quantity superior to most?
